Most people do some minor and ineffective email marketing. But it’s so random, you can’t possibly describe it as being part of a email marketing strategy. If so, you are far ahead of all of the businesses who don’t do any email marketing. Even if you are already using emails blasts, having an effective email marketing strategy is essential to your website or app to maximize its full profit potential.
This begs the question what makes a successful email marketing strategy. It’s getting people to agree to opt in to your list. You have to figure out how get your visitors to say yes to receiving constant email messages from you. Now you not violating and anti-spam law and your emails are much more likely to be opened by your captive audience on a regular basis. Subscribers to your email now get all your special offers pushed to them as often as you want, without having to rely of the client initiative or advertising to drive them to your website or app.
At the bare minimum, you should trap the email address of people complete online purchases. Just add it to the workflow of the purchase process. Current customers always comprise the most responsive lists for future ecommerce offers. These customers have already purchased from you, and are more likely to buy from you again.
It is well known that most visitors to your site or app will not complete a purchase, but we have to try and capture their email addresses in creative ways.  Some people just make decisions more slowly and we shouldn’t abandon them, but market to them carefully and methodically over time using an auto responder series. An email marketing strategy on how to get their email addresses is simple: signup form at the top of the page, attention bar, pop-ups, special offers, entry popup, and exit popups.
In summary, the major part of an email marketing strategy is to give non-buyers a reason to sign up for your email list. Try and segment the lists based on the offers that cause people to sign up. Just because they weren’t prepared to buy this time, doesn’t mean they won’t be ready the next time you contact them with email.
Each email you send out should provide a fair trade value – they will visit your site and get something they perceive to be of value. You can send out on offer for a free report, or an ebook, or informational pieces that relate to your product, or you can send out sales offers. But offering perceived value is absolutely necessary to having an effective email marketing strategy.
